Neabsco Mills Road widening design approved

Written by: What’s Up Prince William

Officials have approved the design of a project that seeks to address traffic on a Woodbridge road.

The Board of County Supervisors recently voted in favor of the final plan for the Neabsco Mills Road widening project.

As part of the estimated $34.3 million plan, the two-lane undivided road will become a four-lane divided road.

Project leaders will also add a shared-use trail and a sidewalk along the 0.8 mile-long section, which runs between Freedom High School and Northern Virginia Community College’s (NOVA) Woodbridge campus.

Some changes have been made to a design that was presented at an information meeting and a public hearing in the fall.

The design would have forced customers of Hanco Center businesses to make a u-turn near NOVA’s southern entrance.

Tractor trailer and tow truck drivers, attendees explained, would struggle to make the turn.

The updated design offers a u-turn located just beyond Hanco Center, according to Supervisor Frank Principi’s Chief of Staff Emily Guerrero.

“This is the closest to Route 1 it could be; VDOT required a certain distance for safety reasons,” Guerrero wrote in an email.

Work is expected to begin on the project in fall 2020 and be completed in fall 2022.
