Observing National Pet Month In Prince William County

Written By: Prince William County

The month of May marks National Pet Month, and the Prince William County Animal Control Bureau (PWCACB) wants to help the community get involved. More than seven million companion animals enter the shelters nationwide, while under 73 percent of all the animals are either adopted or sent to rescue.

The PWCACB has helped tens of thousands of animals find forever homes, with approximately 1,900 being adopted annually. However, this would not be possible without the support of the Prince William County community. Here are a few ways to help shelter animals find homes this month.

Adopt

The bureau posts numerous animals weekly that are looking for new homes. To adopt an animal, visit Petfinder.com to see all the animals available for adoption. If unable to adopt, share them with friends and family interested in adoption.

Donate

The shelter is always in need of resources to help care for animals entering the shelter. Ask for the shelter’s donation list or visit the County website.

Volunteer or Foster

The shelter is actively seeking volunteers and fosters. Volunteers perform daily shelter functions, such as dog walking, cat enrichment and more. The goal of the foster program is to increase live release rates, free up kennel space, shorten the duration of the stay and improve the overall health and quality of life for the animals in the Prince William County Animal Shelter.

There are numerous ways to get involved with the shelter. To learn about how to get involved, contact the shelter at animalshelter@pwcgov.org or (703) 792-6465.
