We are pleased to share that the 495 Express Lanes Extension is scheduled to open, pending favorable weather, to traffic on Saturday, November 22, 2025, by 7:00 a.m. This milestone brings new travel choices and improved connectivity for drivers in the Tysons–McLean region.
The extension adds 2.5 miles of express lanes on I‑495, providing:
- Faster, more reliable trips – northbound travelers during peak periods may save up to 13 minutes.
- New connections to the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Dulles Toll Road.
- Improved options for carpoolers and transit riders, including free travel for HOV‑3+ with E‑ZPass Flex, buses, and motorcycles.
To help you share accurate information with your constituents, we have attached:
- Facts for Drivers One-Pager – key details on how to use the lanes safely and new traffic patterns.
- Project Brochure – overview of benefits and new access points.
Key reminders for drivers:
- Plan for new traffic patterns and use extra caution during the opening period.
- Visit www.ExpressLanes.com/495Extension for maps, toll information, and FAQs.
- Never stop on the highway unless it’s an emergency; move to the left shoulder if needed.
This project is a public-private partnership between VDOT and Transurban, designed to enhance mobility and reduce congestion across the region.
