Written By: Prince William County

Prince William County Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson, center, presents a certificate proclaiming Feb. 7, 2024, as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County to Prince William Police Chief Peter Newsham, left, Captain Jaime Pavol, Sgt. Althea Keen, Sgt. Guillermo Fontanez, Lt. Shawn Peak, Sgt. Mary Buggé and Lt. Michelle Wheeler.

The proclamation stated that in the 59 years the crossing guard unit has been active and protecting children, there have been no deaths or serious injury. There are currently 60 school crossing guards working 75 crossings at 47 schools in the county every day. In the past school year, the crossing guards conducted 27,000 safe crossings with school children crossing streets on their way to school more than one million times.

In recognizing the crossing guards, the Board encouraged people to recognize their crossing guards and let them know they are appreciated.
